Robert Coale, M.D.
Biography
Dr. Coale has been in practice at the Southwest General Health Center since 2011 and is Board Certified by the American Board of Orthopaedic Surgery and with Subspecialty Certification in Orthopaedic Sports Medicine. He has extensive training in sports medicine and shoulder surgery. He is fellowship trained at the University of Michigan where he provided care to Division I athletes of all sports. He also has provided extensive team physician coverage for the University of Michigan Football team as well as the Ice Hockey, Gymnastics, and Wrestling programs. Dr. Coale’s event coverage is notable for the NCAA college football Gator Bowl in Jacksonville, Florida as well as the NCAA Division I Wrestling Collegiate Championships among numerous other events. In the past, Dr. Coale has been the team physician for Lake Erie College as well. He currently serves as the team physician for Strongsville High School where he has been since 2011 and Berea Midpark High School since 2019. He also has provided extensive care to athletes from the surrounding school systems and sports programs in Northeast Ohio. He currently serves as the Medical Director for the Southwest General Sports Medicine Program and the Chief of Surgery at Southwest General Medical Center.
While providing expertise in general orthopaedic surgery including fractures and knee replacement, Dr. Coale provides state-of-the-art care in arthroscopic and sports medicine care with particular focus on ACL reconstruction, cartilage restoration, rotator cuff repair, and shoulder instability surgery. He also has particular focus and expertise on total and reverse shoulder replacement. Dr. Coale most recently has been one of the first surgeons nationwide to utilized the advanced technology of patient specific instrumented shoulder replacement. Dr. Coale has numerous publications including book chapters and academic articles in orthopaedics.
Dr. Coale was born and raised in Annapolis, Maryland, and has been in the Cleveland area since 2005. Dr. Coale, along with is wife, enjoys raising his five young boys, in Northeast Ohio.
